Milky Way over desert landscape

The United Arab Emirates is currently offering residents and visitors an extraordinary celestial spectacle - the majestic arc of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, clearly visible in night skies across the country. Often poetically referred to as the "Galactic River," this stunning astronomical phenomenon reveals its brightest core and spiral arms during late night hours.

Ahmed Hassan, Technical Director and accomplished Astrophotographer at Dubai Astronomy Group, reveals that Al Qua'a in Abu Dhabi stands as the premier location for Milky Way observation. "This pristine dark-sky site offers unparalleled views while remaining conveniently accessible from major urban centers," Hassan explains.

"After turning off main roads, a compact dirt track leads to perfect open viewing areas," describes Hassan. He emphasizes proper stargazing etiquette: "Park vehicles beside pathways and walk short distances into undisturbed sand areas to prevent light pollution from car lamps and minimize dust disturbance."

Prime Viewing Season

The celestial show runs annually from May through October, with July and August delivering peak visibility conditions when our galaxy's brilliant core reaches its highest elevation above UAE horizons.

Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, Chairman of Emirates Astronomical Society, confirms via Al Bayan newspaper that "Summer nights between May and August present ideal Milky Way observation windows. During July particularly, atmospheric conditions combine with optimal galactic positioning to create breathtaking clarity."
